What – or who – is an octopus? On the one hand, octopuses pose puzzles to science – how can we understand such a strange uncanny creature? – and on the other, they open up a rich potential through their intense aesthetic and changeable form for artistic imagination. The project “Octopus Encounters” picks up, where scientific-rational views on octopuses reach their limits and features a series of artistic works produced in large part for this exhibition project. In conjunction with scientific positions the exhibition makes it possible to experience complex living environments of octopuses, that offer new perspectives on how to bring us closer to this other being.

Was – oder wer ist ein Oktopus? Oktopusse geben einerseits der Wissenschaft Rätsel auf – wie lässt sich ein so unheimlich fremdartiges Wesen erfassen? – und eröffnen andererseits durch ihre hochgradig ästhetischen und wandelbaren Eigenschaften vielfältiges Potential für künstlerische Imagination. Die Ausstellung „Octopus Encounters“ setzt da an, wo wissenschaftlich-rationale Betrachtungsweisen von Oktopussen an ihre Grenzen stoßen und präsentiert künstlerische Werke, die zum größten Teil für diese Ausstellung entstanden sind. Im Zusammenspiel mit wissenschaftlichen Positionen machen sie komplexe Lebenswelten von Oktopussen erfahrbar und vermitteln neue Perspektiven, um diesem anderen Wesen näher zu kommen.

Okto-Lab – Laboratory for Octopus Aesthetics
Okto-Lab is a space for collaboration to explore these questions through interdisciplinary perspectives. By way of a collaborative curatorial praxis that brings artists and scientists into conversation with each other, we explore the potential for telling interdisciplinary eco- and species-critical cephalopod tales. Under the guidance of artistic methods of investigation, we want to employ creative strategies for listening to octopuses and helping them tell their own stories, while also using this encounter with the octopus’ alienness to question existing forms of narration.
The Okto-Lab research-team is presently comprised of Yvette Watt and Toby Juliff (School of Creative Arts and Media/University of Tasmania, Australia); Maike Riedinger and André Krebber (Faculty of Social Sciences/University of Kassel, Germany), Anne Hölck (scenographer and curator, Germany). The project has been developed in cooperation with international artists, cultural workers and scientists.

Okto-Lab schafft einen Raum, in dem diese Fragen in kollaborativer Praxis und mit interdisziplinärem Ansatz erkundet werden. Dabei sollen, geleitet durch künstlerisch geprägte Forschungsansätze, neuartige Strategien und Wege entstehen, Oktopussen Gehör zu verschaffen und ihre Geschichten zu erzählen. Zugleich wollen wir die Begegnungen mit der eigensinnigen Fremdartigkeit von Oktopussen nutzen, um bestehende Formen der Narration aufzubrechen.
Das Forschungsteam von Okto-Lab setzt sich zusammen aus Yvette Watt und Toby Juliff (School of Creative Arts/ University of Tasmania, Australien), Maike Riedinger und André Krebber (Fachbereich Sozialwissenschaften/Universität Kassel, Deutschland) sowie Anne Hölck (Szenografin und Kuratorin, Deutschland). Die Projekte entstehen in Kooperation mit internationalen Künstler*innen, Kulturschaffenden und Wissenschaftler*innen aus verschiedenen Disziplinen.
